It&#8217;s what the <a href=\"\/tag\/oil\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> Oil<\/strong><\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"\/tag\/gas\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>gas<\/strong><\/a> flows through once the well is completed. Smaller <a href=\"\/tag\/diameter\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>diameter<\/strong><\/a> than casing, usually 2-3\/8&#8243; to 4-1\/2&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>Both need to meet API <a href=\"\/tag\/5ct\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> 5CT<\/strong><\/strong><\/a>. Both need to be right for your well <a href=\"\/tag\/conditions\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>conditions<\/strong><\/a>. Get either one wrong, and you&#8217;re <a href=\"\/tag\/looking\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>looking<\/strong><\/a> at serious <a href=\"\/tag\/problems\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>problems<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>**The <a href=\"\/tag\/grades\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/grade\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>grade<\/strong><\/a>s<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/that\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>that<\/strong><\/a> Matter**<\/p>\n<p>API 5CT defines a bunch of <a href=\"\/tag\/steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>steel<\/strong><\/a> gra<a href=\"\/tag\/des\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>des<\/strong><\/a>. Here are the ones you&#8217;ll <a href=\"\/tag\/actually\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/actual\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>actual<\/strong><\/a>ly<\/strong><\/a> use:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **H40, <a href=\"\/tag\/j55\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/j55-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>J55<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/tag\/k55\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/k55-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>K55<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Light duty. Shallow wells, low pressure. J55 is the workhorse for surface casing.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/n80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/n80-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>N80<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 The sweet spot for intermediate casing. Good <a href=\"\/tag\/strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strength<\/strong><\/a>, reasonable cost.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/l80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/l80-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>L80<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 When you&#8217;re dealing with sour gas (H2S), L80 is your go-to. It&#8217;s resistant to sulfide stress cracking.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/c90\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> C90<\/strong><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/tag\/t95\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>T95<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Higher strength sour <a href=\"\/tag\/service\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>service<\/strong><\/a> grades. For challenging well conditions.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/p110-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>P110<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 <a href=\"\/tag\/high-strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High strength<\/strong><\/a> for deep, high-pressure wells. Not for sour service unless you specify the right variant.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/q125\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/q125-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Q125<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 The big gun. Ultra-high strength for extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<p>**What to Look For in Your Casing String**<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the checklist I run through on every project:<\/p>\n<p>1. **Body yield strength** \u2014 <a href=\"\/tag\/does\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>does<\/strong><\/a> the <a href=\"\/tag\/pipe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> Pipe<\/strong><\/strong><\/a> have the strength to handle the loads? Tension, <a href=\"\/tag\/compression\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>compression<\/strong><\/a>, burst, collapse \u2014 all four need to check out.<br \/>\n2. **<a href=\"\/tag\/connection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>connection<\/strong><\/a> integrity** \u2014 The connection is the weak point. Make sure you&#8217;re using the right <a href=\"\/tag\/thread\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>thread<\/strong><\/a> type (STC, LTC, BTC, or <a href=\"\/tag\/premium\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>premium<\/strong><\/a>) for your application.<br \/>\n3. **Drift diameter** \u2014 If you&#8217;re running <a href=\"\/tag\/tools\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>tools<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"\/tag\/packers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Packers<\/strong><\/a> through the casing, the drift <a href=\"\/tag\/needs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>needs<\/strong><\/a> to be right.<br \/>\n4. **<a href=\"\/tag\/hydrostatic-test\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hydrostatic <a href=\"\/tag\/test\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>test<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>ing** \u2014 Every pipe should be tested. No exceptions.<br \/>\n5. **<a href=\"\/tag\/non-destructive-testing\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Non-destructive testing<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Ultrasonic, electro<a href=\"\/tag\/magnetic\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>magnetic<\/strong><\/a>, or magnetic particle <a href=\"\/tag\/inspection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>inspection<\/strong><\/a> catches defects you can&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>**Common Mistakes That Cost Money**<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen a lot of casing <a href=\"\/tag\/failures\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/fail\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>fail<\/strong><\/a>ures<\/strong><\/a> over the years. Here are the <a href=\"\/tag\/patterns\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/pattern\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>pattern<\/strong><\/a>s<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **Wrong grade for the env<a href=\"\/tag\/iron\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>iron<\/strong><\/a>ment** \u2014 Using P110 in sour service without the right chemistry. Hello, sulfide stress cracking.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Poor connection make-up** \u2014 Over-torqued or under-torqued connections leak. That means poor zonal isolation.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Skipping the running inspection** \u2014 Every joint should be inspected before it goes in the hole. Dents, scratches, thread damage \u2014 catch it on the surface, not under<a href=\"\/tag\/ground\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ground<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>**The Bottom Line**<\/p>\n<p>Your casing and tubing string is a <a href=\"\/tag\/long-term\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>long-term<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/investment\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>investment<\/strong><\/a>. It needs to last the life of the well \u2014 20, 30, 40 years.
