But when you&#8217;re tapping 400\u00b0F steam from under<a href=\"\/tag\/ground\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ground<\/strong><\/a> to generate electricity, the <a href=\"\/tag\/pipe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> Pipe<\/strong><\/strong><\/a> you use matters a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk about high-<a href=\"\/tag\/temperature\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>tem<a href=\"\/tag\/per\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>per<\/strong><\/a>ature<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/steel-pipe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>steel<\/strong><\/a> pipe<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/for\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>for<\/strong><\/a> geothermal energy projects.<\/p>\n<p>**The Geothermal Env<a href=\"\/tag\/iron\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>iron<\/strong><\/a>ment**<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what geothermal pipe is up against:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **Temperatures**: 300\u00b0F to 600\u00b0F (150\u00b0C to 315\u00b0C) depending on the <a href=\"\/tag\/resource\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>resource<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; **Pressures**: 100-300 PSI <a href=\"\/tag\/typical\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>typical<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; **Chemistry**: Geothermal brine can be corrosive \u2014 chlori<a href=\"\/tag\/des\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>des<\/strong><\/a>, sulfides, CO2<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/service\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>service<\/strong><\/a> life**: 30+ years expected<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a harsh environment. Not all pipe can handle it.<\/p>\n<p>**<a href=\"\/tag\/material\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>material<\/strong><\/a> Selection for Geothermal**<\/p>\n<p>For geothermal service, you need steel that handles both temperature and <a href=\"\/tag\/corrosion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>corrosion<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/carbon-steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/carbon\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>carbon<\/strong><\/a> steel<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"\/tag\/api\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong>\u00a0API<\/strong><\/strong><\/a> 5L, <a href=\"\/tag\/astm-a106\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/astm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>astm<\/strong><\/a> a106<\/strong><\/a>)** \u2014 Works for lower temperature wells (under 350\u00b0F) with proper corrosion <a href=\"\/tag\/protect\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>protect<\/strong><\/a>ion.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Chrome-moly steel (<a href=\"\/tag\/astm-a335\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>astm a335<\/strong><\/a> P11, P22)** \u2014 For higher temperatures. The chromium adds <a href=\"\/tag\/corrosion-resistance\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Corrosion <a href=\"\/tag\/resistance\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>resistance<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/stainless-steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/stainless\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>stainless<\/strong><\/a> steel<\/strong><\/a> (316, 316L)** \u2014 For the most corrosive geothermal brines. More expensive, but some<a href=\"\/tag\/time\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>time<\/strong><\/a>s necessary.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Duplex stainless** \u2014 For extreme <a href=\"\/tag\/conditions\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>conditions<\/strong><\/a>. <a href=\"\/tag\/high-strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High <a href=\"\/tag\/strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strength<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/tag\/excellent\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>excellent<\/strong><\/a> corrosion resistance.<\/p>\n<p>**Where the Pipe Goes**<\/p>\n<p>A geothermal power plant has several <a href=\"\/tag\/piping\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>piping<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/systems\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>systems<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>1. **<a href=\"\/tag\/production\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>production<\/strong><\/a> wells** \u2014 Bringing <a href=\"\/tag\/hot\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hot<\/strong><\/a> brine or steam to the <a href=\"\/tag\/surface\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>surface<\/strong><\/a>. This is the <a href=\"\/tag\/critical\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>critical<\/strong><\/a> high-temperature, high-corrosion application.<br \/>\n2. **Injection wells** \u2014 Returning cooled brine underground. Lower temperature, but still corrosive.<br \/>\n3. **Surface piping** \u2014 Moving steam or brine <a href=\"\/tag\/between\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>between<\/strong><\/a> wells and the power plant.<br \/>\n4. **Power plant piping** \u2014 Steam turbines, <a href=\"\/tag\/heat-exchangers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>heat exchangers<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/tag\/condensers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>condensers<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>**What the Spec Looks Like**<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a typical spec for geothermal production <a href=\"\/tag\/well-casing\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/well-casing-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>well <a href=\"\/tag\/casing\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/casing-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Casing<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/size\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>size<\/strong><\/a>**: 9-5\/8&#8243; to 13-3\/8&#8243; <a href=\"\/tag\/production-casing\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Production casing<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; **Material**: <a href=\"\/tag\/api-5ct-l80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/api-5ct\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/api-5c\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>api 5c<\/strong><\/a>t<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/l80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/l80-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>L80<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a> or C95 for moderate conditions, chrome-moly for severe service<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/connection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>connection<\/strong><\/a>**: <a href=\"\/tag\/premium\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>premium<\/strong><\/a> connections for high temperature integrity<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/coating\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>coating<\/strong><\/a>**: <a href=\"\/tag\/internal\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>internal<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/corrosion-resistant\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>corrosion-resistant<\/strong><\/a> coating or cladding<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/test\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>test<\/strong><\/a>ing**: Full body UT, connection <a href=\"\/tag\/inspection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>inspection<\/strong><\/a>, drift testing<\/p>\n<p>**Corrosion Protection <a href=\"\/tag\/strategies\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strategies<\/strong><\/a>**<\/p>\n<p>Geothermal brine is tough on pipe. Here&#8217;s how you protect it:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **Material selection** \u2014 Choose <a href=\"\/tag\/alloy\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>alloy<\/strong><\/a>s resistant to the <a href=\"\/tag\/specific\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>specific<\/strong><\/a> brine chemistry.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/internal-coating\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Internal coating<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Epoxy or <a href=\"\/tag\/special\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>special<\/strong><\/a>ized high-temperature coatings.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Cathodic protection** \u2014 For surface piping and injection wells.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/chemical\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>chemical<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/treatment\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>treatment<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Corrosion inhibitors injected <a href=\"\/tag\/into\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>into<\/strong><\/a> the brine.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Regular inspection** \u2014 <a href=\"\/tag\/monitor\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>monitor<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/wall-thickness\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wall <a href=\"\/tag\/thickness\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/thick\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>thick<\/strong><\/a>ness<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a> and condition over time.<\/p>\n<p>**<a href=\"\/tag\/installation\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>installation<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/challenges\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>challenges<\/strong><\/a>**<\/p>\n<p>Geothermal well construction has <a href=\"\/tag\/unique\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>unique<\/strong><\/a> challenges:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **High temperatures during <a href=\"\/tag\/drilling\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/drill\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>drill<\/strong><\/a>ing<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 The well is hot before you even start production.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Thermal cycling** \u2014 Pipe heats up and cools down with operation. But the pipe needs to handle extreme conditions for decades.
